1. Experience Natural Wildlife on the Bayou – Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge

The Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge is a 4,212 acre refuge composed of freshwater marsh and Cypress-Tupelo Swamp. The refuge is only accessible by boat and provides excellent habitat for waterfowl, wading birds and neotropical songbirds. A one mile drive-through nature trail is accessible by car.

2. Get a Guided Tour In The Bayou Gardens –  Wildlife Garden

Walk through a live cypress swamp. Small alligator farm with small to large alligators and a 110-pound loggerhead turtle. Nature trails. Bed and breakfast cabins available in the swamp. French-speaking host. Gardens open Tues-Sat. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

3. Take A Walk On The Bayouside Pier – Downtown Marina

As you stroll along the pier, you can watch boaters traveling the Intracoastal Waterway at mile marker 58’s safe harbor between the two bridges on Bayou Terrebonne in Downtown Houma. If you’re boating, shore power, water, pump-out facilities and transit service available. Open 24 hours.

4. Get Up Close & Personal With Live Alligators – Greenwood Gator Farm & Tours

Ever wanted to learn about the art of alligator hunting? You can catch and hold baby alligators and see large alligators at a live show.   Open 7 days a week. Tour times at 10:30am and 1:30pm. Call for reservations. Credit cards accepted.

5. Explore the Wetlands – Pointe-Au-Chenes Wildlife Management Area

With 35,000 acres of wetlands, this area is composed primarily of freshwater wetlands and provides an important habitat for wintering waterfowl of the Mississippi Flyway. From its two birding decks, visitors can see year-round resident wildlife including white tail deer, otter, alligators and diverse bird species. It is also home to nesting rookeries of heron, egret and bald eagles. Public boat launch available.
